BromWiki:Babel
|
User language templates aid multilingual communication by making it easier to contact someone who speaks a certain langauge. The idea originated on the Wikimedia Commons and has also been implemented on Meta-Wiki and some of the other Wikipedias, to varying extents. To participate, you can add the Babel template to your user page by following these instructions:
- Start off with {{subst:Babel-
- Then add the number of language templates you want to display, followed by |
- e.g. {{subst:Babel-3| for three languages
- Next add one of the following codes for each language you speak, seperated by |, where xx is the Bromwiki code for the language:
- xx-1 for basic command (the ability to understand and answer simple questions in the language)
- xx-2 for an intermediate level of knowledge
- xx-3 for advanced or fluent understanding (the ability to correct spelling and grammar errors in the language)
- xx if you're a native speaker or have a grasp of the language comparable to a native speaker
- Then finish by adding closing brackets: }}
So, for example, {{subst:Babel-2|en|de-1}} would indicate a native speaker of English with basic knowledge of German. {{subst:Babel-3|en|de-2|es-1}} would indicate a native speaker of English with an intermediate knowledge of German, and a basic knowledge of Spanish.
(Note that the subst: part is not strictly necessary, but eases load on the servers by avoiding having to look up a template inside a template.)
You can also add stand-alone language templates by following the {{User xx-1}} format.
These templates add you to the category associated with your level of understanding, and to the overall category for that language.
To find someone who speaks a particular language, see user languages, and follow the links.
